Short answer: Choose a foam pump for hand washing at a bathroom or kitchen sink — it stretches soap much further and rinses off faster. Choose a liquid pump for dish soap, thicker formulas, lotions, or anything where you want a controlled dose of undiluted product.
Nearly every ceramic dispenser sold as "foam and liquid" is the same vessel with a different pump head screwed onto it. The bottle doesn't change. The pump does — and that single part decides how the dispenser behaves every day.
What is actually different inside the pump?
A liquid pump is a simple piston. You press down, it pushes a measured amount of soap up the dip tube and out the spout. Whatever you put in is what comes out.
A foam pump has a small mixing chamber and a fine mesh screen near the top. On the downstroke it pulls in both soap and air, forces them through the mesh, and what leaves the spout is a light lather. Because most of the volume is air, a single press uses roughly a third to a fifth as much actual soap as a liquid press.

How to fill a foam pump correctly
This is the single most common mistake, and it is the reason most "my foam dispenser stopped working" complaints exist. A foam pump needs thin, watery liquid to aerate properly.
You have two options:
- Buy foaming hand soap refills. These are already formulated thin. Pour and go.
- Dilute regular liquid soap. Use roughly 1 part soap to 4 parts water. Add the water first, then the soap, then swirl gently — don't shake, or you'll fill the bottle with foam before you've even used it.
If you pour undiluted hand soap into a foam pump, it will either dispense a thick sputtering blob or stop moving entirely. That is not a defective pump. That is a pump doing what physics allows.
Can you switch between foam and liquid later?
Yes, on any dispenser where the pump unscrews from the neck — which includes all of our ceramic dispensers. The pump is a separate part. Unscrew the old one, rinse the bottle, screw on the new one.
This matters more than people expect at the time of purchase. Households change: a liquid dispenser at the kitchen sink becomes a foam dispenser in the guest bath when you rearrange. Which should you buy for each room?
Bathroom sink
Foam, almost always. Hand washing is the only job, foam rinses cleanly, and a bottle lasts far longer between refills. If the bathroom is used by children, foam is the clear pick — the lather is visible immediately, which makes the twenty-second hand wash easier to enforce.
Kitchen sink
Depends on the job. If the dispenser holds dish soap, go liquid — dish soap needs to be concentrated to cut grease, and diluting it defeats the purpose. If it's a dedicated hand-washing dispenser next to the sink, foam still wins.
Powder room or guest bath
Foam. These sinks get infrequent, short visits, and foam soap is the more pleasant experience for someone using an unfamiliar bathroom.
Laundry or utility sink
Liquid. You're often washing off something stubborn, and full-strength soap does that better.
Does the material of the dispenser change the answer?
No — the pump determines foam versus liquid, not the bottle. But the bottle does change other things you may care about: weight and stability, whether you can see the soap level, and how it holds up to a wet countertop. One practical note: opaque ceramic means you can't see the level, so you refill when the pump starts drawing air rather than on sight. Some people find that annoying; others prefer not looking at a half-empty bottle of soap on the counter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put foaming hand soap in a liquid pump?
You can, but it will dispense as a thin, runny liquid that tends to run off your hands before you've lathered. Foaming refills are pre-diluted, so they're too watery for a liquid pump to feel right.
Can I put dish soap in a foam pump?
Only diluted. Dish soap is thicker than hand soap, so use a slightly higher water ratio — around 1 part soap to 5 parts water — and expect to experiment. Undiluted dish soap will clog a foam pump quickly.
Why is my foam pump dispensing less than it used to?
Usually dried soap on the mesh screen. Pump warm water through it a dozen times, or unscrew the pump and soak the head in warm water for ten minutes. This restores most pumps completely.
Do foam pumps really save soap?
Yes, meaningfully. A press of foam contains far less soap by volume than a press of liquid, because most of what you're dispensing is air. In practice a bottle of soap in a foam dispenser lasts substantially longer than the same soap in a liquid dispenser.
Which pump lasts longer?
Liquid pumps have fewer parts and no mesh, so they're marginally more durable over years of use. Foam pumps last a long time too — they just need the occasional rinse to keep the mesh clear.
