The weekly wipe-down

- Dampen a soft cloth with warm water. Microfiber is ideal; a dish cloth is fine.
- Wipe the body, paying attention to the base where water pools on a wet countertop.
- Wipe the spout to remove the dried drop of soap that collects after each use.
- Dry with a second cloth. Standing water on a countertop is what leaves mineral spots.
If there's a stubborn spot, add a drop of the same hand soap the dispenser holds. You almost never need anything stronger.
The monthly deep clean
Do this whenever you refill — the two jobs go together naturally.
- Unscrew the pump and set it aside.
- Empty the remaining soap. Don't top up over old soap; residue at the bottom is where clogs and odours begin.
- Rinse the bottle with warm water. Swirl and pour out. If there's film on the inside walls, a bottle brush with soft bristles clears it — avoid anything metal or abrasive.
- Flush the pump. Stand it in a mug of warm water with the dip tube submerged and pump repeatedly until the water runs clear. This is the single most valuable maintenance step, especially for foam pumps, where the mesh screen gradually accumulates dried soap.
- Dry the neck and threads before reassembling, then refill and seat the pump straight.

Hard water spots and white residue
Mineral deposits from tap water. Wipe with a cloth dampened in a weak solution — one part white vinegar to four parts water — then rinse the cloth and go over it again with plain water, and dry. Brief contact only. If you have very hard water, drying the dispenser after each countertop cleaning prevents the deposits from forming at all.
Dried soap crust around the spout
Hold a warm damp cloth over it for a minute to soften, then wipe. Don't pick or scrape — the nozzle edge scratches easily.
Discolouration inside the bottle
Usually soap residue rather than staining. Fill with warm water, add a drop of dish soap, let it stand an hour, then agitate and rinse. Repeat if needed.
Odour
Old soap left too long, or water sitting in an unused dispenser. Empty completely, rinse, and let the bottle air-dry fully upside down before refilling.
Rust-coloured marks near the pump
Check the pump. Quality pumps use stainless steel, but any metal will eventually mark if it stands in soap indefinitely. Flushing monthly and drying the neck prevents this.
Does the finish change the care?
Slightly. Matte glazes show water spots and fingerprints more readily than gloss, so they benefit more from drying after a wipe.
